What to see in Mundaka
The Atalaya viewpoint
This is the best place to see the famous ‘left wave’. This wave, boasted of by the people of Mundaka, attracts thousands of surfers every year to take on the challenge of riding its 3 to 4 metres’ height.
The Atalaya viewpoint offers incredible views over the surrounding area and a sense of peace that will make you not want to leave the place.
The quay of Txorrokopunta
If you like spectacular views, there are great ones over the beaches of Laida and Laidatxu from this quay. In the summertime it is the place for surf classes, with beginners paddling across to the beach of Laida on their surfboards.
The Chapel of Santa Catalina
In 1879, and as a result of the ruinous state in which it was, the chapel collapsed almost completely, but a new chapel to replace it was inaugurated within six years.
The new chapel is a transition between Gothic and Renaissance architecture and was used by the Fishermen’s Guild as a hospital during epidemics and for munitions supplies.
The Church of Santa María
This church was destroyed during the ‘War of the Bands’ (blood feuds) but was rebuilt and extended in the 16th century. At the end of the 19th century more building work was done and the church of Santa Maria changed its appearance completely, both inside and outside.
