The market of Gernika is one of the biggest in Biscay and is well-known for the traditional ‘Mondays of Gernika’.
Since ancient times the baserritarras (farmers) have come to the market to offer the best products from their market gardens, corrals and ovens, making Market Day an authentic festivity. The day not only involves buying and selling, it could include lunch in one of the town’s excellent restaurants followed by watching a pelota match in the frontón.
In Gernika this tradition is so deep-rooted that its market has a permanent structure to hold it every Monday of the year regardless of the weather. There are over 300 stalls offering the best products from the area (tomatoes, Gernika peppers, cheeses and the town’s well-known beans).
The market is also worth a visit on the first Saturday of every month from June to December, when monographic markets are held exclusively dedicated to products such as txakoli from Urdaibai, Idiazabal cheese or Gernika peppers.
This tradition makes the market in Gernika the biggest in Biscay in October, when the popular ‘primer lunes’ (first Monday) of the month is held, with a large livestock show, and the ‘último lunes’ (last Monday) with an agricultural fair and a festive atmosphere that should not be missed.
