Located on a spectacular site next to Paseo Abandoibarra and the La Salve bridge, the Museo Guggenheim was revolutionary in that the city stopped turning its back on its river/estuary after a century.
20 years lighting up the city
Since it opened more than 20 years ago, the museum has played a major role in the transformation and urban revitalisation of Bilbao. as part of an ambitious reconstruction programme for the city that began in 1980. Other new designs were created for the airport, the Metro, and a pedestrian bridge over the river became a symbol of the city.
Located in the heart of Bilbao, the Guggenheim Museum covers 24,000 m² with 11,000 m² of exhibition space. As well as the exhibition areas it has ‘Zero Espazioa’, a 300-seat auditorium, a cafeteria, restaurant and a shop/bookshop.
Its most characteristic feature is its structure, with an architecture of curvaceous and inexact forms. The innovative building is particularly spectacular from the outside.
The area around the Guggenheim Bilbao museum has also become an attractive place to spend the afternoon in good company, enjoy a drink on a terrace with a view of the museum or play with the kids in the children’s park.
Don’t miss the sculpture ‘Mamá Araña’ by the artist Louise Bourgeois, It belongs to the Guggenheim Bilbao collection and is on display in the open air in Paseo Abandoibarra (next to the museum).
As for the collections that can be visited inside the museum, we would highlight the work of Richard Serra, Jeff Koons, Jorge Oteiza, Eduardo Chillida or Jenny Holzer. The Guggenheim also programmes attractive temporary exhibitions, so you will always find something to enjoy during a repeat visit to the museum.
