The Fine Arts Museum of Bilbao opened to the public in 1914 under the direction of the painter from Bilbao, Manuel Losada. A few years later the modern art museum was created, and it merged with the Fine Arts Museum in 1945, the year in which the initial building was constructed.

In 1970 the modern building was added, and an extensive renovation was carried out in 2001, leaving the Fine Arts Museum as we see it today. The exhibition area was extended to 1000 m².
Preparations for the inauguration of the Fine Arts Museum of Bilbao were made possible by an extensive and valuable art collection belonging to the businessman Laureano de Jado. This was followed by donations by Antonio Plasencia, Manuel Losada for the corporations that owned the Casa de Juntas in Gernika or the consulate in Bilbao.

The Fine Arts Museum of Bilbao sets out to bring together, study and exhibit its own collection, but it also aims to enrich the collection and offer sufficient services to provide Basque society with an education based on cultural values.

FACILITIES

The museum currently covers a surface area of 13,914 m², of which 5,089 are distributed in 33 rooms dedicated to the permanent collection, 1,142 to temporary collections and the rest to internal services and attention to visitors.

THE COLLECTION

The collection of the Fine Arts Museum of Bilbao consists of around 10,000 pieces. Of these, 1,500 are paintings, 400 sculptures, more than 6,000 on paper and another 1,000 examples of applied arts.

It includes major works by El Greco, Ribera, Murillo, Goya and Zurbarán as well as Dutch artists such as Gossart, Benson, Coecke and De Vos, among others.

It is a set of works that trace the evolution of art from the 12th century to the present day from Romanesque to Gothic and Baroque arts, covering Romanticism, Realism and Impressionism up to contemporary art.

During its more than 100 years of existence, collaboration between society, local artists and public institutions has meant that the Fine Arts Museum has continued to grow and achieve a large collection considered one of the most varied and important in Spain.
