The origin of the town, documented from 1524, was thanks to a small group of fishermen from the nearby village of Ibarrangelu.
It belongs to the district of Busturialdea-Urdaibai and is located within the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. It is an essential excursion to get to know the Biscay coast.
What to see in Elantxobe
The church of San Nicolás de Bari
This church, located in the highest part of the village, was built in 1803 by the Fishermen’s Guild.
The Old Quarter
The steep streets that go down to the sea reflect the essence of its marine past and present.
On the way down to the harbour you see a large stone that the power of the waves pushed up to the top of the cliffs.
The harbour of Elantxobe
As it is a harbour that is very open to the sea, in 1783 the Fisherman’s Guild built some breakwaters to protect it from the waves. These breakwaters have been reinforced over the years.
It is still used as a fishing harbour.
The greatest attraction of Elantxobe, however, is undoubtedly its picturesque image. Stroll along its steep streets, enjoy the peace of the place and its views and the excellent gastronomy from the area.
Not far to the west, and still within the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, beach lovers will find the beautiful ones of Laga and Laida, highly popular with surfers. To the east, there is another singular seaside village: Ea, with its town centre marked by the estuary, its bridges and blue-flag beaches safe for bathing.
