Over 820 metres long, this beach is very popular due to the proximity of urban areas. It is also one of the best surf beaches on the Biscay coast.
The second longest beach in Biscay province
It is a semi-urban beach without a seafront promenade, characterised by its good waves and is the second longest beach in Vizcaya after the one at Bakio.
The area around the beaches of Arrietara and Atxabiribil has tall cliffs where you can enjoy a stroll and get some great views of the coast.
Arrietara is the temple of surf in the area and is home to major competitions. It also has about half a dozen clubs and three surf schools.
How to get there
Reaching these beaches is easy; you can get there by car or public transport and there is also a car park (you have to pay in summer but it is free of charge the rest of the year).
If you prefer to travel there by public transport, Metro Bilbao has a stop in Sopelana, from where you can walk approximately one mile to the beach or take a bus provided by the town council.
